Understanding the Requirements

In order to register and drive your auto in Virginia, it must pass an annual safety and emissions inspection. To ensure your travel security and that of your fellow drivers, the inspection includes a check of major systems, including brakes, steering and suspension, exhaust, and fuel. Your technician will also verify that your tires are safe, having sufficient tread, and note the absence of any leaks. Other external points include ensuring the integrity of all lights, the horn, windshield wipers, and license plates. Inside, the checklist encompasses seat belts, airbags, and the structural integrity of the doors and floor pans.<./p>

Once your car passes inspection, you'll receive a certificate and a windshield sticker. Should your auto not pass, you'll receive a rejection sticker. This designation allows you to continue driving temporarily. You'll have 15 days to correct the issues and get your vehicle inspected again. The singular exception to these rules is the antique auto. If you own a car that's at least 25 years old, you can register it as an antique and avoid the inspection standard. However, this exemption is not intended for older daily driver cars. Once you accept this caveat, you can only drive the vehicle to collector car events, in parades, to get repairs, etc., and then not more than 250 miles from your home.
